In the culture of me project, we created boxes that describe different parts of us taking photos of objects and gluing them on, that make us who we are, using the Habits of Mind. The Habits of Mind are significance, perspective, evidence, connection, and supposition. We also created a narrative to go with our boxes.
Narrative:
My friends have made me who I am. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now. They have shaped my personality, and take part of the decisions I make. They’ve guided me through rough times, even when with each other. They have gotten me out of bad habits such as cursing a lot, being snappy, or even violent at times. Back in 8th grade, I was a very critical and negative person, and my friends have helped me realize that acting that way is not healthy. I was lashing out on everything because of anger I was holding back for so long from issues at home. Anyways, one of my friends made a deal with me to not swear out loud, and if we did, we’d punch who ever cursed on the arm. But don’t worry, it was nothing too serious.
The friend that has helped me with that, actually use to hate me. But I use to hate her too. During summer bridge, a camp made to learn more about the middle school, I met Hannah. On the last day of summer bridge she broke her promise of letting me keep our group’s creation. Which was just a house made of graham crackers and toothpaste. Hannah made me believe that I could keep it, and bring it home, but it wasn’t until five minutes later we got into a ridiculous fight about letting her keep it instead. She would keep exclaiming that she needed it for some apparent reason, so I made up my mind, and let her keep it. We left each other with bad thoughts, so you could imagine the awkward tension between us when we saw each other in the same class. One day, while hanging out with my friend, she invited Hannah to sit with us. I realized later that I was talking more to Hannah than I was to my other friend, and that I connected with her.
Other than the friends I have in America, I also have a few that are in Australia. Their names are Behtash, and Josh. I met Josh because of Hannah, on Minecraft. And then I met Josh’s friend, who is now my friend, Behtash. I’ve known both of them for about seven months now, and I’ve pulled several all-nighters with them. There have been times where lots of drama has happened, and I don’t talk to them for a while. But I realize that if I stop talking to them forever, I’ll have a less amount of people who will listen to my problems. I connect with them over Skype, and message each other all the time. Having internet friends can be fun, unless you know that there’s no way you can meet them because they live halfway across the world.
As years passed, Hannah introduced me to drawing again. We have art competitions sometimes, or we just doodle randomly at each other’s houses. When I was little, I went to my Aunt’s wedding. It was really strange because the guy who was getting married to my Aunt was wearing a Scottish kilt, and instead of normal wedding music the bagpipes were playing. Near the end of the wedding, there was a photo frame that everyone was signing. When I was writing something, I saw a drawing of Homer Simpson that caught my eye. I tried copying the drawing, but it looked terrible. The eyes weren’t even close to circles, and the head looked more lumpy than oval. But then again I’m comparing my 11 year old’s self drawing, to a professional animator of the actual show of, “The Simpsons”. From there I knew I wanted to get better at drawing.
Speaking of drawing, I hope for a future where I can be an animator for Disney, or a photographer for weddings. Being an animator for Disney would be a dream, because I love Disney and drawing. Plus, it would feel like an important job because you get to see the plot of new movies and the creators. Being a photographer for weddings would be cool because you get to travel the world with your customers paying for your airplane tickets. You also get a lot of money if you do a good job. I also just want to be able to afford the things I need, and things I want. Where I can find a life partner who enjoys things I love to do, and I’m loving my job of photography or being an animator. I try to be positive, so that even years from now, I’m still known as a happy person.
